Effect of Frankl’s Logotherapy on Psychological Well-being and Self-compassion of Students

Abstract:

Introduction: Depression is a one of the most common psychological problems that can decrease the psychological well-being and self-compassion. There are different ways to improve the psychological status of people which one of them is logotherapy. Present research aimed to determine effect of Frankl’s logotherapy on psychological well-being and self-compassion of students. Methods: This research was a semi-experimental with a pre-test and post-test design with a control group. The research population was girl students with depression of Farhangian University of Birjand Pardis in the 2017-18 academic years which 30 people selected by available sampling method and randomly assigned to two groups and groups selected by randomly method with using lottery as an experimental and control groups. The experimental group trained 8 sessions of 90 minute (weekly two sessions) by method of Frankl’s logotherapy. The groups evaluated in pre-test and post-test phases in terms of psychological well-being and self-compassion. The data were analyzed by statistical tests. Results: The findings showed that there was a significant difference between the groups in terms of psychological well-being and self-compassion. In the other words the Frankl’s logotherapy significantly increased the psychological well-being (F=86/39, P<0/001) and self-compassion (F=92/68, P<0/001) of students. Conclusions: The results indicate the effect of Frankl’s logotherapy on improving the psychological characteristics (increasing the psychological well-being and self-compassion). Therefore, it is suggested that counselors and therapists use from Frankl’s logotherapy method to increase the psychological well-being and self-compassion of students.
